“Of all the additions to Dad’s photograph collection, the present offering is perhaps the best known. He originally titled the image, Charlie Potato, the Navajo’s name, but protests from the subject led him to drop the specific for the more general title of “The Navajo.” 
Dad later wrote about the image: “This is one of my most successful photographs, having been shown in nearly one hundred salons around the world. The dignity of the ancient citizens of Arizona shows clearly in the features of this man. I call this photograph, which was taken at an Indian fair near Window Rock in 1938, “The Navajo.”” ~ Barry M. Goldwater
